Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca: complete guide to traveling to Mexico’s surfing paradise

On Mexico’s Pacific coast, surrounded by beaches, palm trees and some of the most famous waves on the planet, lies Puerto Escondido, one of those places where it is very easy to arrive planning to stay for a few days and end up staying much longer than expected.

For years, it was one of the best-kept secrets on the coast of Oaxaca. Today, Puerto Escondido can no longer be considered unknown, but it still preserves much of the spirit that turned it into a meeting point for surfers, backpackers and travelers from all over the world.

Wild beaches, small bays with calmer waters, Mexican markets, restaurants, hostels, cafés, surf houses and lively nightlife all coexist here. All of this comes together with a relaxed and multicultural atmosphere that forms a big part of its personality.

And then there is the surfing.

Zicatela Beach is one of the world’s major surfing destinations, known for its powerful waves and barrels. Oaxaca’s official tourism website notes that the waves can reach several meters in height and that the beach hosts international competitions.

Many travelers also talk about the so-called “Puerto Effect”: that strange tendency to keep postponing your departure date.

We completely understand it.

Where to stay in Puerto Escondido

One of Puerto Escondido’s advantages is that there are accommodation options for almost every type of traveler: backpacker hostels, surf houses, small hotels, apartments, boutique accommodations and beachfront properties.

The important thing is not so much choosing “the best accommodation” as choosing the area of Puerto Escondido that best suits your trip.

Zicatela

It is one of the best-known and liveliest areas of Puerto Escondido. It has a beach, restaurants, bars, surf schools and plenty of activity both during the day and at night.

It is a good base for travelers who want to combine the beach, surfing and nightlife.

La Punta de Zicatela

La Punta has a very strong international and surfing atmosphere. You will find cafés, restaurants, small accommodations and plenty of activity centered around surfing.

It is one of the preferred areas for travelers planning to stay for several weeks and who want the beach, restaurants and a social atmosphere within easy reach.

Rinconada and Carrizalillo

If we prefer something quieter, we would choose the area around Carrizalillo and Rinconada.

From here, it is easy to reach beaches such as Carrizalillo, Manzanillo and Puerto Angelito, while also having access to plenty of restaurants and services.

Carrizalillo is also one of the classic places to start learning how to surf.

Downtown

Downtown Puerto Escondido offers a slightly more local experience and provides easy access to markets, shops and transport connections.

Among the long-established hostels in this area is Tower Bridge Hostel, which is still operating and continues to cater mainly to travelers and backpackers.

Getting around Puerto Escondido

Puerto Escondido invites you to walk, but the distances between some areas are greater than they appear on a map, especially under the coastal heat or when climbing some of its hills.

You will find taxis and shared public transport. If you arrive by plane, the most practical option is to compare the transport alternatives available at the airport and at your accommodation.

What to eat in Puerto Escondido

Traveling to Oaxaca without paying attention to the food would mean missing out on a huge part of the experience.

Puerto Escondido offers both traditional Oaxacan cuisine and excellent dishes based on Pacific fish and seafood.

Tlayudas, fish tacos, ceviches, grilled fish, quesadillas, moles and corn-based dishes are all part of the experience. Puerto has also become a fairly cosmopolitan destination, so you will find everything from small family-run food stalls to contemporary restaurants, cafés, international cuisine and more sophisticated dining options.

But if we want to discover a more everyday side of the destination, it is especially worth visiting Benito Juárez Market and other local markets. Tropical fruit, vegetables, tortillas, cheeses, chilies, juices, prepared dishes, meat and fish are all part of daily life.

For those staying in a hostel or apartment with a kitchen, shopping at the market is also an excellent way to keep the budget under control while experiencing more of local life. Oaxaca’s Ministry of Tourism also highlights seafood and regional cuisine as an important part of Puerto Escondido’s food scene.

What to do in Puerto Escondido

We could spend weeks here without getting bored. Surfing, beaches, diving, snorkeling, boat trips, sunsets, sea turtles, lagoons, mangroves and nightlife make Puerto Escondido suitable both for a short vacation and for a much longer trip.

And for us, everything should begin with its beaches.

The best beaches in Puerto Escondido

One of the biggest attractions of the destination is that its beaches are very different from one another. We should not limit ourselves to Zicatela.

Zicatela Beach

It is Puerto Escondido’s most famous beach and one of its great symbols.

Its long stretch of sand facing the Pacific receives powerful swells that have turned the area into an international reference point for experienced surfers. Oaxaca’s Ministry of Tourism specifically highlights it for its surfing conditions.

But that is precisely why caution is important.

Zicatela is not a beach for learning how to swim or for casually trying surfing for the first time when conditions are strong. The currents and waves can be very demanding.

Even if we are not planning to enter the water, it is worth visiting to walk along the beach, watch the surfers and enjoy one of Puerto Escondido’s most iconic landscapes.

La Punta de Zicatela

At the far end of Zicatela we find La Punta, one of the current epicenters of Puerto Escondido’s surf culture.

Its atmosphere is different from central Zicatela: restaurants, cafés, surfers and long-term travelers mix together along its small streets.

Depending on the swell and the surfer’s level, it can offer more accessible conditions than Zicatela’s powerful beach break, although it is always advisable to check with local surf schools and instructors before entering the water.

Carrizalillo Beach

Carrizalillo is a small bay surrounded by vegetation and reached by descending a long staircase. Its scenery, with the ocean framed by tropical hillsides, is among the most photogenic in Puerto Escondido.

When conditions are suitable, it is also one of the places used for learning how to surf.

Oaxaca’s official tourism website includes Carrizalillo among the recommended beaches in Puerto Escondido and also highlights its opportunities for water activities.

Bacocho Beach

Huge, open to the Pacific and much less urban than other beaches, Bacocho is especially recommended at sunset.

It is also known for projects connected with sea turtle conservation.

There is something special about sitting here as the sun begins to set and watching the sky change color over the Pacific.

Puerto Angelito and Manzanillo

These are two interesting alternatives for travelers who prefer waters that are generally more sheltered than those at Zicatela.

Oaxaca’s official tourism information also identifies the Manzanillo area as suitable for activities such as snorkeling.

Surfing in Puerto Escondido

You cannot talk about Puerto Escondido without talking about surfing.

Its coastline offers very different breaks and attracts both professionals and people who want to get on a surfboard for the first time.

For beginners, the best option is to start with a surf school or instructor and choose a beach that is suitable for the conditions that day. The Pacific Ocean can change dramatically from one day to the next.

Those who already have experience will find a well-developed surf culture in the area, with board rentals, repair shops, surf camps, schools and plenty of local surfers.

And there is one essential rule: respect surf etiquette.

Priority, taking turns, positioning and respecting other surfers are all part of the sport. Learning these rules before entering the water helps prevent accidents and unnecessary conflicts.

Sea turtle releases in Puerto Escondido

Another major attraction in Puerto Escondido is the opportunity to learn about local sea turtle conservation projects.

The Oaxaca coast is an important nesting area for several species of sea turtle. In fact, the nearby Lagunas de Chacahua National Park protects beaches where sea turtles also nest.

In the Bacocho area, organizations work to protect nests, recover eggs that are at risk and improve the chances of hatchlings successfully reaching the ocean.

If we take part in a turtle release activity, it is important to always follow the instructions given by the project staff: do not handle the animals directly, do not use flash photography and avoid interfering with their natural journey toward the sea.

Schedules, seasons and participation conditions may vary, so we recommend checking the latest information once you are in Puerto Escondido rather than relying on schedules published years ago.

More than simply a tourist activity, it should be seen as an opportunity to learn about sea turtle conservation and the threats these animals face.

Diving, snorkeling and marine life

We can also discover Puerto Escondido beneath the surface of the water.

In different parts of the coast, we will find options for diving, snorkeling, recreational fishing and boat excursions.

The seabed in this part of the Pacific combines rocky and sandy areas with interesting marine biodiversity. Oaxaca’s official tourism authority specifically includes diving and recreational fishing among the activities available in Puerto Escondido.

For any dolphin, whale or other wildlife-watching activity, we recommend choosing operators that keep a respectful distance, avoid chasing animals and prioritize responsible observation over direct interaction.

Bioluminescence near Puerto Escondido

One of the most fascinating experiences we can have while traveling through this part of Oaxaca is witnessing bioluminescence.

Under certain conditions, microorganisms in the water produce flashes of light when the water moves, creating one of those natural phenomena that is difficult to forget.

One of the best-known places to experience it is Manialtepec Lagoon, located near Puerto Escondido.

The intensity of the phenomenon depends on natural conditions, so it should never be presented as guaranteed. The phase of the moon, rainfall, tides and water conditions can all have a significant influence on the experience.

There is also another excursion that deserves several days.

Lagunas de Chacahua: an essential side trip

If we have enough time, we recommend including Lagunas de Chacahua in the trip.

It is worth correcting a mistake that often appears in older travel guides: Lagunas de Chacahua is not a recently created national park.

It was declared a National Park on July 9, 1937, and protects nearly 15,000 hectares of lagoons, wetlands, mangroves, tropical forests and coastal dunes. It also provides habitat for migratory birds and various marine species.

It is a different side of Oaxaca.

Quieter, more isolated and deeply connected with its coastal ecosystems.

The journey there is part of the experience: roads, small boats, mangroves, lagoons and finally a vast stretch of Pacific coastline.

In the area, we can travel through mangroves by boat, observe birds, enjoy the beach, go surfing and, when natural conditions are right, also experience bioluminescence.

Rather than visiting for just a few hours, we would stay for at least one night whenever the itinerary allows.

Nightlife in Puerto Escondido

When the sun goes down, Puerto changes its rhythm.

Zicatela and La Punta are home to much of the nightlife, although the bar and nightlife scene changes fairly frequently.

And that is precisely why we prefer not to build this guide around specific venue names.

You will find beach bars, terraces, electronic music, reggae, salsa, hostel parties and much quieter places where you can simply have a drink by the sea.

One of Puerto’s advantages is that we can adapt the evening to our own style: from staying out until sunrise to simply having dinner near the beach and ending the night listening to the Pacific Ocean.

How many days do we need in Puerto Escondido?

To see the main beaches and get a general feel for the destination, we could spend three or four days here.

But it would be a shame to rush.

With five or six days, we can combine beaches, a surf lesson, local food, sea turtles and an excursion around the surrounding area without constantly being in a hurry.

And if we also want to visit Chacahua or learn how to surf at a more relaxed pace, staying for a week starts to make much more sense.

Then there is the famous Puerto Effect.

In that case, the departure ticket can become something purely theoretical.

Best time to visit Puerto Escondido

Puerto Escondido can be visited throughout the year, but the experience changes depending on the season.

The dry months generally offer more stable weather and are especially attractive for travelers looking for beaches and sunshine. The rainy season transforms the landscape, makes the vegetation greener and also coincides with certain natural cycles and different surfing conditions.

For surfers, the time of year is especially important, as large Pacific swells can completely transform beaches such as Zicatela.

If our goal is to learn, we should not choose our travel dates simply because we want to find “the biggest waves.” Quite the opposite: we should look for local surf schools and conditions that are appropriate for our level.

Tips for traveling to Puerto Escondido

Puerto Escondido works best when we do not try to turn the trip into an overly rigid itinerary.

It is worth leaving room to change beaches, sign up for a surf lesson, spend time talking with other travelers, discover a restaurant by chance or cancel our plans simply because the sunset looks too good to miss.

We also recommend taking sun protection seriously, staying hydrated, respecting beach flags and ocean warnings, asking surfers or lifeguards about conditions before entering the water and avoiding leaving any trash on beaches or in natural areas.

And if we visit Chacahua, Manialtepec or any other protected ecosystem, we should travel while trying to keep our impact as low as possible.

Puerto Escondido: much more than surfing

At first glance, Puerto Escondido may look like just another tropical beach destination.

But spending only a few days here is enough to discover that it has something different.

There is the power of the Pacific at Zicatela. The quiet mornings at Carrizalillo. The markets. The fish tacos. The surfboards leaning against walls. The conversations between travelers who have arrived from completely different countries. The afternoons at Bacocho. The mangroves of Chacahua.

And there is that feeling that nobody seems to be in much of a hurry to leave.

Perhaps that is what the Puerto Effect really is.

We arrive thinking about beaches and surfing.

And we end up looking for an excuse to stay many more days.
